The papers from the third international Hans Christian conference, that was held in Snowbird, Utah, USA, in June 2000, have been published in the book H.C. Andersen. Old Problems and New Readings. Papers from the Third International Hans Christian Andersen Conference

By Lars Bo Jensen - University of Southern Denmark - 28 May 2004

In 2000, the third international HCA conference was held in Snowbird, Utah, USA (the two former conferences were held in Odense, Denmark, at the University of Southern Denmark). The conference was held "over there", because Brigham Young University has a very active center for scandinavian studies. The papers from the third conference have now been published in the book H.C. Andersen. Old Problems and New Readings. Papers from the Third International Hans Christian Andersen Conference. It contains an introduction by the editor, professor Steven P. Sondrup, and 14 papers:

  • Nathaniel Cramer: »H.C. Andersen's "Tante Tandpine" and the Crisis of Representation«
  • James Massengale: »Ut Poesis (Picturae) Musica«
  • Jacob Bøggild: »Ruinous Reflections: On H.C. Andersen's Ambiguous Position Between Romanticism and Modernism«
  • Marianne Stecher-Hansen: »H.C. Andersen's "Historien om en Moder": Allegory and Symbol in the Danish Golden Age«
  • Frank Hugus: »H.C. Andersen Adapts Eugène Scribe For the Danish Stage«
  • Kim Andersen: »"Genius" and the Problem of "Livs-Anskuelse": Kierkegaard Reading Andersen«
  • Johan de Mylius: »The Andersen Legacy: Georg and Edvard Brandes in Dispute on H.C. Andersen«
  • Herbert Rowland: »The Image of H.C. Andersen in American Magazines During the Author's Lifetime«
  • Inge Lise Rasmussen: »H.C. Andersen: Reminiscence as Image and Echo«
  • Niels Ingwersen: »Tall Tales on the Small Screen«
  • Aage Jørgensen: »"What Would the Children Say...?": "The Marsh King's Daughter" Revisited«
  • Annelies van Hees: »The Little Mermaid«
  • Kristi Planck Johnson: »The Millenium: Vision Leads to Travel«
  • Inger Lise Jensen: »Why Are There So Many Interpretations of H.C. Andersen's "The Shadow"?«

The book is entirely in English. It contains among others - as the above list displays - an article by Johan de Mylius on the remarkable - but never before elaborated - significant disagreement of the brothers Georg and Edvard Brandes concerning their view on Andersen as a person.

The book has been published by Brigham Young University, The University Press of Southern Denmark and The Hans Christian Andersen Center in cooperation. It may be purchased at The University Press of Southern Denmark, www.universitypress.dk. 294 pages, 348,00 kr. (incl. moms) / ? 46,85 / £ 31,20 / $ 57,00.
