The official celebration of the bicentenary of the birth of Hans Christian Andersen came to a close on 6 December 2005.

The bicentennial event was celebrated in 60 nations worldwide between 2 April and 6 December 2005.

The aim of the celebration was to promote wider appreciation and awareness of Hans Christian Andersen worldwide. The many bicentennial projects within the arts and education sought to highlight well-known as well as lesser-known aspects of the life and work of the world-famous Danish storyteller and reached out to an audience of all ages on all continents.
