Australia's Hans Christian Andersen bicentenary commemorations were launched in Sydney today. Australia is going to play a key role in the worldwide celebration of the Hans Christian Andersen bicentenary. This became apparent at a grand event at the Sydney Opera House this morning.

A new edition of Hans Christian Andersen's fairytales to be issued to all Danish sixth-grade schoolchildren was today presented by Danish Minister of Education, Bertel Haarder at the Nyboder School in Copenhagen at noon. Chairman of the Hans Christian Andersen 2005 Foundation, Mayor of Odense Anker Boye, also attended the presentation.

Yesterday, March 1, the programme was launced at the Benaki Museum in Athens for the Greek bicentenary celebration of Hans Christian Andersen. At the same occasion three personalities representing Greek cultural and social life was appointed Hans Christian Andersen ambassadors by the Danish Ambassador to Greece, Niels Henrik Sliben.
