A new Russian feature film with the working title 'Andersens Fantasies' based on four of Hans Christian Andersen's most famous fairytales is in the making.

The film, based on the fairytales 'The Swineherd', 'The Shadow', 'The Princess on the Pea' and 'The Little Match Girl', is an international co-production featuring Danish, Russian, German, British and American actors.

At an event at the Russian Centre for Culture and Science in Copenhagen, the 76-year-old director revealed that the project is a long-held dream that finally promises to come true. Eldar Ryjasanov has directed more than 30 feature films and TV series and expects the Hans Christian Andersen film to be the final crowning of his career.

The Russian project is not the only Hans Christian Andersen film to open during the bicentenary. There are currently two Danish films under way.

The Hans Christian Andersen 2005 Foundation has asked Danish film director Bille August to create an English-language film and the Nordisk Film Production Company will co-produce a film with the Danish broadcasting corporation, Danmarks Radio, to be directed by Rumle Hammerich.
